XR6 Turbo Stage 1 Intercooler

(Click for larger version)

The stage 1 intercooler has been designed to utilize the factory intercooler plumbing to keep the costs down but still maintain optimum efficiency. This system uses exactly the same intercooler core as the stage 2 kit.

Using a massive bar & plate core with measurements (core only) of 420 flow length x 360 height x 90mm thick it is the largest intercooler on the market today that still uses the stock intercooler plumbing.

Test Results

The below test was done a bone stock vehicle

First test was a baseline power run on the Southern Motor Works Mainline dyno. While we were at it we measured the stock intercooler outlet temperature. (measured just before the crossover pipe). The below graph shows how poorly the factory intercooler performs. Starting from the bottom you can see the first run which starts off at approx. 49 degree C and rises to 67 by the end of the run. After 3 runs the temp peaks at 72….and this is a dead standard car. I would hate to see what would happen to the inlet temps if the car was put on a race circuit. The baseline power figure was 165kw at the wheels.

Next we installed the stage 1 intercooler kit.

Without any other changes what so ever we ran the car up again. This time we were keeping a close eye on air/fuel ratio as the larger more efficient intercooler will introduce cooler, more dense air and a possible lean condition.

The air fuel ratios remained very safe at 11.0/1 at full song and the intercooler outlet temps saw a peak of 38C after 3 hard runs. (ambient was about 28C)

Below shows the before and after power runs. Peak difference was 28.6kw ATW which is an outstanding result.
